The long project organized by the school during my second year allows my team and my to look into the question of ecology, especially on digital. It’s a very difficult problem to resolve, but we had 12 weeks to do it, so here how we attempt to answer the question.

Today, everyone is impacted by the climate change, but who really cares by doing action to limit their carbon print ? In France, a lot of people consider them to be ecological, but only a little percentage are engaged.

According to Carbone 4
20%
of french people are really acting for the sake of the planet, whereas they are 90% to pretend they will modify their behaviour.

Thanks to this project my group and me wanted to design a solution to guide users for the change of their behaviour, by trying to answer the question: How can we raise users' awareness of ecology and encourage them to take action?

Concept
Some concept research were led to define exactly what service we wanted to develop :
The first concept Erratique was intended to be a booking platform to travel by respecting the environment. This project is inspired by erratic birds which, when they migrate, have an optimized route. People could book their trip on the website, by choosing low pricing & carbon alternatives and a very simplified planification.
Mobilize user against climate change with an application which allows them to create challenge, is the second concept, the one we choosed. People could change their behaviour by enjoying and acting genuinely. The idea of community is also a good feature put on show. The name Eksolovo, mean “Ecological Solution” in esperanto, a language created for everyone.

There are several trends in ecology, particularly regarding people's actions. Many individuals buy second-hand products, participate in clean-up walks, and aim for zero waste. They also use carbon trackers and analyzers to monitor their CO2 emissions and find ways to reduce them. Most of these environmentally conscious individuals are young people aged 18-30, which is why we chose them as our target audience.

Engagment
How can we get users to invest in the ecological cause by improving every day?
Community
How to create a community bond between players so they can surpass themselves ?

These two user flows helped us design the app around its primitive feature: challenges. We created two personas: the leader, who can create and manage communities and challenges, and the regular user, who follows a basic flow when using the app.

With this navigation, users keep their goal to be engaged in a community, as our 2 main values.

Through wireframing our concept, we defined the layout of our primitive: challenges. We added another feature to improve engagement: Analytics. This dashboard displays graphics showing users their consumption and carbon footprint.
We also enhanced the challenge system by adding proof-of-completion requirements, bonuses and penalties that affect user scores.

I really liked this project as it challenged us to answer a very specific question. However, I am aware of the irony in trying to solve climate change through digital means, since digital technology itself represents 4% of greenhouse gas emissions. We approached it at our scale to lead a project from scratch, and if I had to do it again, I would likely choose a different subject.
